At the Field of Dreams, baseball's Black and brown stars have A-MAIZE-ING night

Brothers stole the show in the whitest and most corniest places, if possible, in this country.AdvertisementThis was the conclusion of a night MLB loved. It could have ended in disaster. It could not have moved the needle.MLB was promoting its marquee night on national television on a 32-year old movie that many of its current viewers have probably never seen. It pitted two of the best teams in the game in an 8000-seat box, in the middle of Dyersville, Iowa.It was indeed a roll of the dice by MLB for its first ever Field of Dreams game. The sport was rewarded in many ways. There were many goosebump moments and so much action on-the field. Yes, there was a Hollywood end, just like Kevin Costner's 1989 film Field of Dreams. The White Sox's star shortstop Tim Anderson, who is also a White Sox player, ended the show with a two-run homer in the ninth. This gave Chicago a 9-8 win.It was a fleeting moment that many will never forget. For others, the impact could be much greater.AdvertisementOn a large stage, black and brown Major Leaguers were seen. It was almost like baseball had turned the clock back. It was a moment of greatness. One young Black or brown child could have left the TV and said, "Wow!" It was great fun. It was fun.In the ninth inning, three African-American baseball players hit four homers.AdvertisementAaron Judge hit a two-out and two-run home run in the ninth to bring the Yankees within one run at 7-6. Giancarlo Stanton then followed with a two-out, two run home run to bring the Yankees up 8-7.The stadium buzz and the noise level were incredible. Stantons' shot became viral via social media. On a Thursday night of August, MLB was a huge success.AdvertisementAnderson stole the show with his game winning homer into the cornfield in the right. In center field, fireworks blazed and lit up the sky. It was quite a spectacle. It was impossible to not see the elephant in this room. The stars of this game were all Black and brown, a sport that has struggled with attracting Black people to its games.AdvertisementAlex Rodriguez could not let this moment pass by without making comments on it on Fox's postgame show.A-Rod shared his love for the fellas with his fellow analysts. Four African Americans have scored four home runs. This is a huge night for baseball.AdvertisementIt was a historic night. It is important that more African Americans return to baseball, just like we did when we broke into it.Rodriguez is spot on. Rodriguez is spot on.AdvertisementWhile there are still Black and Brown stars in the game, their numbers have declined despite an increase in the last few seasons. There are many more minor league teams. It's just that we haven't seen the Black and Brown stars on the big stage.AdvertisementThe storyline at the All-Star Game in Denver was about Fernando Tatis Jr., and Shohei Ohtani. All the stars of the game, including Vlad Guerrero Jr. and the MVP, were foreign-born. It was also the closer Liam Hendricks, who gave up the two homers to Judge Stanton and Stanton last night, who won the save.Baseball is clearly an international sport. That's incredible.Black people can play and excel in baseball. Black children have been encouraged to play basketball and football for decades.AdvertisementMany high schools and AAUs won't allow kids to play multiple sports. They require that the children focus only on one sport and practice it all day. Baseball was therefore pushed to the side. This is absurd. Exhibit A is Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray. He was the first ever player to be drafted in either the MLB or NFL draft in 2019. He chose football.AdvertisementBaseball is trying to fight the cool factor. It's not something that kids think is cool.Anderson is a cool guy in every sport. Anderson is a swaggering maniac. It was evident when he walked around the bases with style and animation.AdvertisementThe brothers in Iowa stole the show. MLB may have also won the hearts of some Black and Brown kids that night.
