Times Insider provides insight into the workings of Times Journalism and explains who and what they are.Newsletters are more ancient than newspapers and email is many decades older than the internet. Email newsletters have a long history, but they are still very popular. Here at The New York Times we strive to add depth, ambition, and scale to our email newsletters. It's been 20 years since The Times first published a newsletter. In 2001, we started covering finance, technology, and books. Some of these newsletters still thrive in different forms as part of a portfolio reaching around 15 million people each week, a number which has increased over the past two years. The Morning and DealBook are a gateway to our journalism and provide original reporting and analysis. My colleagues and I have been discussing the next steps with Times newsletters' editorial director. What can we do to break new ground and provide sophisticated coverage of the most important topics for our readers? Our subscribers already consider newsletters a fundamental part of their experience. Nearly half of them receive a newsletter each week. We are unveiling a new type of Times journalism this week: More than 15 newsletters will be made available to only our subscribers. Our goal is to keep the inbox alive as a place for journalism and to increase the value of a Times subscription.
