LA Clippers re-sign Kawhi Leonard to 4-year, $176.3 million max deal

The Clippers announced that Kawhi Leonard will continue to be with the Clippers for the long-term after signing a new contract Thursday.The Clippers didn't reveal the terms of the deal, but ESPN confirmed that Leonard signed a four year, $176.3million max deal with a source. This deal also includes a player option for the fourth year.Leonard previously declined his $36 million player option to become a free agent.Yahoo Sports first reported Leonard's signing Thursday.Lawrence Frank, president of basketball operations for the team, said that Kawhi was a "transcendent player" and that he is a tireless worker who strives to improve every day. We share many of the same goals and have a long-term relationship. As we work to build a championship-caliber team, where players can find the fulfillment and success they desire, this agreement is another milestone for our franchise and fans. We are eager to build with Kawhi."Leonard, who is 30 years old, will likely miss significant time as he returns from surgery on July 13, to fix a partially torn ACL which kept him out the Clippers' last eight playoff games.Two-time Finals MVP Reggie Jackson joined other veteran players like Paul George and Reggie Jackson at the Clippers' opening two games at Las Vegas summer league.Frank stated in the statement that "For now we will do everything we can to support his recovery from injury." "We look forward seeing him back on the court with his teammates."After reaching the Western Conference finals last season, the Clippers spent this offseason retaining their core. They signed Leonard, Jackson, and Nicolas Batum. Serge Ibaka signed into the second year on his contract to return. Justise Winslow was added to the team to fill the gap left by Leonard's injury to his knee.Leonard averaged 24.8 point, 6.5 rebounds, and 5.2 assists during his second season with the Clippers. In 2019, Leonard joined the Clippers free of charge. The team added Leonard to their roster and traded five first-rounders, Shai Gilgeous Alexander and Danilo Galinari, to Oklahoma City for George.Both George and Leonard have been signed to long-term contracts by the Clippers. The Clippers saw the potential of Leonard and George before Leonard's knee injury. They were able to see their potential when Leonard and George played their best basketball together during the playoff stage. Leonard averaged 30.4 point, 7.7 rebound and 4.4 assists. He shot 57.3% in 11 playoff games. George scored 26.9 points, 9.6 rebound and 5.4 assists in the playoffs.
