England v India: Batsman Ollie Pope released from squad for second Test

He had also worked hard to be fit for England's series opening.Opening batsmen Rory Burns, Dom Sibley, and Jasprit Bhumarah were both unable to beat India's pace bowling in their first Test. Number three Zak Crawley was not faring much better.Burns was out for a duck in the fifth ball of day one last week in Nottingham. Sibley scored the highest run score of the top three players in the order with a grinding 28 from 133 balls in the second innings. He was caught behind.Pope, 23 years old, had been in England's loss series against New Zealand in June but did not manage to score any runs in his four innings at the crease. He scored 22, 20 not out and 19, 19 and 23.The right-hander made his Test debut in 2018 against India. He has also achieved one century against South Africa in 2020 and five half centuries since then.Pope, who had just returned from a shoulder injury and was able to play 19 matches in four matches, visited India earlier this year. India won 3-1.
