Zoom's new focus mode could keep students from distracting each other

Zoom announced a new Focus mode. It is designed to prevent students from becoming distracted in virtual classrooms, but still allow the teacher to keep an eye out for everyone. Focus mode, when activated, will prevent participants from seeing each other's screen or videos, but the host can still see all webcams. Focus mode provides some control over Webinar mode without the complexity or lack of flexibility. For example, a teacher might turn Focus mode on while they present, and then turn it off during class discussions. Based on my testing, Focus mode seems to be free for Webinar hosts. This new feature is coming as many districts get ready for the new school year and as COVID-19 continues to be a serious threat. Zoom has added features to enhance tele-learning. It is likely that virtual classrooms will be around for some.Although focus mode will place the teacher's screen share or video in front of students, it will not be the only thing that is on their screens. Participants will see their own video as well as the screen share or videos that have been highlighted by the host. Participants will also be able see the names and emoji reactions of other participants. The feature is a good way to distract students during class. It could also be used outside of learning environments (e.g. during company presentations, when managers worry about employees not paying attention). Zooms Focus mode support article explains that it can be disabled or locked for individuals, groups, and accounts. You can access the feature by clicking on the More button during a meeting after you have turned it on for your account.
