FLORHAM PARK (N.J.) - Denzel Mims, a wide receiver for the New York Jets, used to love salmon. But that is no longer true. He ate a bad plate of salmon in spring and was subsequently afflicted with food poisoning, which led to him losing 20 pounds.Mims stated Wednesday that she hasn't touched salmon since then.Mims was a 2020 second-round selection. He missed the majority of offseason practices because he was dealing with severe side effects. Mims vomited for 2 weeks and was eventually treated with antibiotics due to an intestinal infection. Although he didn't mention where he had eaten the salmon, a source claimed that it was in the Jets' cafeteria. After two months of healthy eating, his weight dropped from 217 to 193, a drastic drop that has only brought him back to 208.The former Baylor standout stated that "it took a huge toll on me."He had a slow start to training camp. His depth chart was slipping and speculation about his future was rife. Although he has shown some improvement in recent days, he caught a fingertip pass for a long touchdown during a 7-on-7 period. However, he is still only fifth or sixth in the Jets' greatly improved receiving corps.Robert Saleh, the coach, was asked if the team would give up on Mims.Mims' rookie season was hampered by another type of injury -- two hamstring injuries in training camp which caused him to miss half of the season. He showed promise when he finally got on the field. He finished with 23 catches for 357 yard (no touchdowns), in nine games. He was the sixth rookie wide receiver to record at least 40 receiving yards in six NFL games. He was expected to return as a starter. However, the Jets signed Corey Davis (free agent) and Keelan Cole (free agent). Elijah Moore was drafted in the second round. The competition suddenly became better. This, along with the illness and transitioning to an offense that requires a different route running technique, led to fewer reps in the first 10 days.Mims stated that she feels like she's catching up, and is almost there. After he recovered from the food poisoning, his family flew to Florida in June to train with Zach Wilson and other skill-position players. He makes it a point to play pitch-and catch with one of his quarterbacks during training camp.Saleh stated that Saleh is hard working and will get more opportunities the harder he works. He's part the rotation."
