The Chicago White Sox announced Wednesday that Carlos Rodon, a Cy Young candidate, was placed on the 10-day injured waiting list for left arm soreness.Rodon, 28 years old, is 9-5 and has a 2.38 ERA in 19 games this season. He could be out for longer than the 10 days required.Tony La Russa, White Sox manager, stated that "we're going on the side of caution" because it seemed to me that this was too optimistic. "If it happens, great. If it doesn't we'll be patient."Rodon noticed the soreness Tuesday, while Rodon was on the road in Minnesota with the team for a series. Rodon flew back to Chicago to be checked by doctors to see if the soreness is more than just fatigue. The club does not believe so. The left-hander is prone to arm injuries and he threw seven innings last season. He has thrown 109 innings so far this year.La Russa stated, "We hope it's only a brief break and he will be back sooner than expected." "There is nothing unusual about our concern."Rodon was originally scheduled to begin the "Field of Dreams” game against the New York Yankees on Thursday, but Lance Lynn has been pushed back one day so that Lynn can throw in the game. Reynaldo Sanchez, a right-hander, will face the Twins on Wednesday afternoon.La Russa stated, "He's a great candidate." "He's been a great asset to that bullpen."After struggling in 2020 as a starter, Lopez now has a 1.59 ERA this year in the bullpen. La Russa was asked by La Russa if Michael Kopech, a key reliever, was being considered for Rodon's replacement. Rodon could miss multiple starts.La Russ stated that he must be considered but that August is now and that extending him to a position where he would be a starter takes away from the role that we really need him. "And we expect Carlos will be back."Lynn won't be playing against the Yankees because La Russa will not see him as such due to a family death. Miguel Cairo, bench coach, will manage in his place.La Russa stated, "He's [Cairo] been speaking about the Yankees the last three days." "I can guarantee that no one will pay more than he will."The White Sox brought up Matt Foster, a right-hander to replace Rodon. They also announced that Yasmani Grandal, catcher (knee), will be starting a rehabilitation assignment with Double A Birmingham. Grandal was out of action since July 1st after sustaining a knee injury on a check swing.La Russa stated that he was just "grinding and grinding" every day during his rehabilitation.
