According to ESPN, the Seattle Seahawks will release defensive end Aldon Smith.Smith was charged with second-degree battery in April, just two days after signing with the Seahawks. He was accused of making a man unconscious by choking him during an altercation that started inside a New Orleans coffee shop. WWL-TV obtained a police report that Smith had confronted Smith about the marital problems the man was having.Smith had signed a $1.127 million, one-year contract with the Seahawks, with $137,000.500 guaranteed.Smith was arrested in Louisiana as the latest of many encounters with the law. This includes multiple DUI arrests, and a domestic violence case. Smith was suspended by the NFL for parts of the 2014-2015 season and for violations of its policies regarding personal conduct and substance abuse from 2016 to 2019.Smith, 31, returned to the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys last season. He had five sacks in 16 NFL games. Three of those were against Seattle. All of them came in the first half.Smith holds the NFL record for 33.5 sacks in his first two seasons. He has now accumulated 52.5 sacks in five years.The Seahawks have a deep bench of edge rushers, including veterans Carlos Dunlap and Benson Mayowa, as well as young prospects like L.J., Alton Robinson, and Darrell Taylor.
