Federal prosecutors suspected Trump Organization CFO lied to them in Michael Cohen hush-money case, report says

CNN cites four people who know the thinking of prosecutors.In early 2018, Weisselberg testified before federal prosecutors in Manhattan about the Trump Organization's role facilitating hush money payments to Stormy Dans, an actress in adult films who claimed to have had an affair with Donald Trump.Cohen was then Trump's personal lawyer and vice president. Daniels was paid directly by Cohen. The Trump Organization then reimbursed Daniels, according to court filings.Cohen pleaded guilty in 2018 to campaign finance violations relating to the hush money scheme and a variety of financial crimes. Since then, he has been vocal in his criticism of his former boss.Weisselberg is currently under investigation in a separate case. This was handled out of the Manhattan state-level district attorney's offices. Prosecutors alleged that Weisselberg, along with the Trump Organization, ran a 15 year scheme to avoid paying taxes on income of $1.7 million over 15 years. The charges have been pleaded not guilty by Weisselberg as well as the lawyers for Trump Organization.Investigators are trying to get Weisselberg to cooperate in a larger case regarding whether Trump was involved in wrongdoing and whether Cohen was guilty of financial crimes.Weisselberg's testimony regarding Cohen was exempted by federal prosecutors. CNN reports that they are skeptical about Weisselberg's claims regarding Cohen's reimbursement by the Trump Organization. CNN reported that the prosecution also has doubts regarding claims made by other witnesses about Trump Organization's operations.Continue the storyCNN reported that federal prosecutors decided not to press perjury charges against Weisselberg nor to revoke the immunity that he was granted.
