Samsung's new 5-nanometer chip is designed for smartwatches

Samsung's Exynos W920 is a new processor specifically designed for smartphones and wearables. Samsung claims that it features an integrated LTE modem, and is the first chip to be made on a 5-nanometer EUV process (extreme ultraviolet) for wearables.This new chip has dual Cortex A55 cores, a Mali G68 GPU and a Cortex M55 processor for always-on displays. It is designed to lower power consumption. It promises a 20% improvement in CPU performance, tenfold increase in GPU speed and a tenfold increase in power consumption over its previous wearable chip. It also boasts the "smallest package available on the market for wearables," the company stated.Samsung stated in its press release that the Exynos W920 supports "a new unified platform Samsung developed jointly with Google" and would be applied first to the forthcoming Galaxy Watch model. This is the Galaxy Watch 4 which leaked last month. It will be revealed tomorrow at Samsung's Galaxy Unpacked event.Samsung is likely to unveil its latest smartwatch software, which marries Tizen OS and Wear OS. This was developed in collaboration with Google. We expect to see new navigation features, Tiles for third party apps, better battery efficiency, and an open interface.
