Sony completes acquisition of Crunchyroll from AT&T

AT&Ts Crunchyroll is officially owned by Sony.Crunchyroll's acquisition by Sony was announced for the first time in December 2020. Crunchyroll will now join Funimation (Sonys anime streaming service), under one roof. Tony Vinciquerra (CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment), stated that the ultimate goal of the merger of the two anime properties is to create a unified anime subscription service as soon as possible.The deal is valued at $1.175billion. According to The Information, AT&T will be buying the service for $1.5billion. The funds will be used by the company to pay off the streaming debt. AT&T decided to abandon its streaming strategy and instead focus on its core connectivity business.Sony will use Crunchyroll to expand its anime streaming service.Vinciquerra stated that Crunchyroll has given us an unparalleled opportunity to deliver anime to anime lovers on any platform. This includes streaming, TV everywhere, and theatrical events.
