SteamVR beta lets you arrange desktop windows inside your virtual world

Valves SteamVR software, which is now in beta, can create floating desktop windows within VR games. This allows you to keep an eye on other apps and applications without having to leave VR. This is a useful addition that allows players to monitor everything from Discord to Twitch chats or Netflix even when they are playing lower-intensity games. Road to VR even suggests that you can watch YouTube while on longer flights in Elite Dangerous.Although the ability to interact with your desktop via SteamVRs dashboard isn't a new feature it has recently been improved. It added the ability to see individual application windows within the dashboard and to connect to VR controllers in-game earlier this year. Apps can now be viewed at a glance. However, it has not been able to float windows indefinitely in game until now. When the SteamVR menu closes, Windows can be viewed onlyYou can still attach a window to your controller or take it off to let it floate in virtual space. While the windows can be seen only while you are actually playing a game of SteamVR, you can still open up the SteamVR menu and interact with them by using a VR controller.Version 1.19.6 of SteamVR now includes floating windows. The beta version of SteamVR is currently in beta. However, it's easy to opt-in via SteamVRs properties window (accessible through right clicking on the Steam games list). Despite all the improvements to the VR platform, SteamVR 2.0 has not been released. This was teased by Valve early last year.
