Google reportedly planning a new Silicon Valley campus with a hardware center

CNBC reported that Google is planning another campus in Silicon Valley, which will house a new research and development center for some of the company's hardware products. CNBC reported that Google has spent more than $389 million to buy land in San Jose, California. It will locate the campus, called Midpoint, between Google's Mountain View headquarters in Mountain View and its mixed-use campus at San Jose. Midpoint will include five office buildings linked by a pedestrian bridge. It will also be located adjacent to three industrial buildings, which planning documents indicate will serve as a hub of its hardware division, including Nest smart home products. CNBC also reported that Google had been planning Midpoint's site since 2018.Google did not immediately respond to a Saturday request for comment. However, a campus with more hardware space makes sense given recent statements by executives. Rick Osterloh, the company's hardware chief, stated that Google is ready for market share in hardware. After a recent visit by The Verges Dieter Bohn to Mountain View to take a look at the Pixel 6, Google's flagship phone is far behind Samsung and Apple.
