Tokyo Olympics: Israel's Linoy Ashram ends Russian dominance in rhythmic gymnastics

Dina Averina (right), was left in tears.Linoy Ashram, Israel's rhythmic gymnastics individual all around champion, caused a major upset and became the first non-Russian champion since 1996.The 22-year old defeated Dina Averina, the Russian Olympic Committee's gold medal favorite, to take the crown.Averina, who was in tears when the scores were revealed were upset and felt that her marks were too low.Averina stated that it was difficult to speak at the moment."I don't like the way that scoring went today."Her twin sister Arina, who placed fourth, consoled her."And this is perhaps the first time that I disagree with the judges. I feel Arina, me and the judges did not receive [a high] score enough."They were favorites for the top medals, having qualified in first place and second.Alina Harnasko won bronze for BelarusPrior to Ashram's win, Israel's best result at this event was Neta Rivkin's seventh-place finish in London 2012.Ashram said, "When I was young, I dreamed of being in the Olympics and competing there. Then I go and take home a gold medal.""It's almost like a dream, I feel like I'm in another world."
