Republicans treated Covid like a bioweapon. Then it turned against them | Rebecca Solnit

Since the Covid-19 pandemic began, some of the most powerful conservatives of the United States have chosen to spread disinformation and mockery about proven methods of fighting the disease. They have caused more economic and social crisis and disease in the United States than any good leadership or science could have. Their malice is so common that it is often not recognized as such. It can be called biological warfare through propaganda.Jared Kushner is the spiritual heir to the army that besieged the city of Caffa on Black Sea in 1346. According to contemporaneous accounts, the army launched plague-infected corpses high above the city walls. This is often how the Black Death arrived in Europe. It would decimate tens of thousands of Europeans over the next fifteen years. Business Insider reported that Kushner's coronavirus team resisted a national strategy because they believed that the virus was affecting Democratic states the most. They also thought that governors could be blamed. This could have prevented the US from becoming the worst-hit country in the world. We could have prevented the Delta variant from causing more deaths and illnesses. As the pandemic began, New York City and Seattle were hard-hit. Republicans believed that the pandemic would first strike Democratic states and cities. In 2020, Black, Latinx, and indigenous peoples were most affected. It is clear that Republicans supported a campaign for mass death and disability, believing it would primarily affect those they considered to be their opponents. However, Democratic governors and Native nations, as well as people with moderate-to leftwing views, have done a better job protecting against this scourge. Republican-led regions and states are the most affected in the country. Recent data shows that Florida, which has 7.5% of the US's population and Ron DeSantis, a raging science denier, was responsible for 20% of all new Covid cases. In an attempt to protect public health (including that of children), the governors of Texas and Florida have removed mask mandates. Supporters of DeSantiss are selling Dont Fauci My Florida Tshirts and drink coolers that have the text: Make no mistake, the threat to bring back masks is not based on science. It was a decision made by liberal government officials who wish to live in a perpetual state of pandemic.Tucker Carlson and Laura Ingraham are the spiritual heirs to Lord Jeffery Amherst. In 1763, an underling wrote, "Could it not be contrived? To send the Small Pox among the disaffected tribesof Indians?". However, there was ample evidence that vaccines protect both the spread and prevention of disease. Vaccines were, in fact, the way smallpox was eradicated worldwide. There's another way to respond to the pandemic. Freedom for white men is a central goal of far-right ideology. The free individual might be obligated to others and the entire system in which they are enmeshed even if they recognize the fact. Science is full of descriptions about our enmeshedness. For example, how pesticides travel beyond their crops, how fossil fuel emissions can cause climate change and health problems, and how collective action can prevent the spread of disease. Rightwing ideology has emphasized the right to own and to carry a gun rather than the right not to be threatened or killed by guns. This is evident in the thousands of Americans who are afflicted with the disease every year.Just as guns are defended against the deaths of gunmen, the right to spread deadly diseases is also defended. It is safe to assume that the Republican leadership understands better and that not all of their followers do. Some are willing to engage in biological warfare, while others are simply tools that can be used in such warfare. Some of them, however, are unwitting corpses being thrown over walls and unconscious smallpox blankets. Others are Amherst in spirit. One of my friends, a masseuse had a client laugh at the end and reveal that her vaccination card was fake. She was definitely an Amherst.Covid-19 is not the first time that people have made a profit by encouraging the death of others. The most extreme example is the fossil fuel industry, which continues to plumb while fully conscious of the climate catastrophe it was causing. Gun and prescription opiates manufacturers have also done this. It is possible that this is the first time that a new threat has not been increased by direct profiteers, but by those selling ideology or sowing division. The death toll is not enough to measure the pandemic's impact. Millions of children were left behind, and millions more were made homeless and unemployed. There was also the possibility of millions feeling anxious and isolated, and millions mourning the loss of loved ones. The hospitalized are often people who could have been protected, were more careful and could have been given a vaccine. This has demoralized the medical workers who showed selflessness the first time around. It is everywhere. Some of it was intentionally spread.
