Ariel Torres wins first-ever karate medal for United States in men's kata

Ariel Torres claimed bronze in Friday's men's kata, winning the first U.S. karate medal.Ryo Kiyuna from Japan won the gold medal beating Damian Quintero of Spain in the final. This was the Olympic debut for the sport.For his demonstration of karate forms, Kiyuna received a 28.72 score. Quintero was first in the final with a score of 27.66.Bronze was also won by Ali Sofuoglu from Turkey.Italy's Luigi Busa defeated Rafael Aghayev of Azerbaijan 1-0 to win the gold medal in the men's 75-kilogram Kumite.Aghayev's Silver is the first Tokyo non-bronze medal for Azerbaijan. However, he was just short of winning the eighth Olympic gold for his country.Bronze was won by Stanislav Horuna from Ukraine and Gabor Harspataki, Hungary.After a scoreless final, Jovana Prekovic of Serbia beat Yin Xiaoyan from China by hantei in the women's 61kilogram kumite to win the gold medal.The three-minute bout was not won by either karateka, but Prekovic was deemed the winner by three out of four judges.Prekovic, 25, won the 2018 world championship at 61 kg. Prekovic's gold medal is her second at the Tokyo Olympics for Serbia.Giana Lotfy, from Egypt, won bronze after narrowly defeating Yin on hantei in her semifinal bout. Merve Coban claimed bronze as well, earning Turkey its third medal in karate within the first two days.
