Tokyo Olympics: Kenya's Peres Jepchirchir wins women's marathon

Jessica Piasecki was at 71st place in 2:55.39.Three of the fastest female marathon runners in the world were from Kenya, but Ruth Chepngetich, the world champion of women's marathon running, pulled through after she lost touch with the leaders at 30km.With five kilometres to go, Jepchirchir was joined by Salpeter and Seidel in the lead group. The Kenyan pair then moved clear. Seidel continued after Salpeter abruptly withdrew and won bronze.Kosgei was a London marathon winner twice and broke Paula Radcliffe’s 16-year-old record at London with a time in 2:14:04 at Chicago Marathon in October 2019. He finished 16 seconds behind Jepchirchir, 10 seconds ahead Seidel.Due to the heat of summer in Japan's capital, both the marathon and the race walking events were moved 500m north of Tokyo into Sapporo, Japan's northern city.14 of the 74 finishers failed to complete Sapporo's distance.
