Hometown hospital cuts ties with Minnesota Vikings QB Kirk Cousins over vaccine comments

EAGAN (Minn.) -- One day after Kirk Cousins reaffirmed his position on the COVID-19 vaccination, Cousins and a hospital he partners with in Holland, Michigan cut ties to the Minnesota Vikings quarterback.Cousins was not vaccinated and was activated from the Vikings' COVID-19/reserve roster on Thursday. He had missed four practices. After rookie Kellen Mond's positive test for the virus, Cousins was considered a close contact.Cousins stated that the Vikings' QB meeting room was too small and that he considered himself a close contact. He also noted that he has had six negative tests and no symptoms since his last contact with Mond. He stated that the position group moved to a larger area within TCO Performance Center, and that he will continue to follow the protocols to avoid being re-listed on the COVID-19/reserve lists.Cousins, however, refused to answer a question about whether he would vaccinate himself.Holland Hospital released a statement via radio station WHTC1450 AM regarding the end of relations with Cousins. Cousins had been a partner with Holland Hospital's sports medicine program since 2017.The statement stated that "As the trusted leader in health care along the lakeshore," they were committed to providing timely and accurate health information."We recognize that everyone is entitled to their opinions, but those speaking on our behalf need to support messages that are in line with the hospital's position regarding vital matters to individual and collective health.Holland Hospital will no longer use Kirk Cousins to be our spokesperson. Kirk is a great friend and colleague. Kirk embodies many of the values we share in our work culture."However, it is important to ensure that all communications regarding COVID vaccinations are consistent and unambiguous.The CDC and top medical experts agree that the COVID vaccine provides the best protection against the virus. The evidence also suggests that people who have been vaccinated are less likely to transmit the virus to their family members or friends.Holland Hospital will continue to recommend the COVID vaccination to all who are eligible. Holland Hospital must maintain its reputation for truthful, consistent information and evidence-based guidance in health care.
