What If: Marvel's Watcher Is the Fan to End All Fans

Each episode of Marvels What If takes place in a different time zone within the larger MCU multiverse. However, the whole series is told through the eyes of the Watcheran all seeing, all-knowing being who is sworn to watch but not engage with what he sees. Jeffrey Wright, the voice behind the animation that brings the Marvel Comics iconic being to life in animation, was recently interviewed by io9 to learn more.AdvertisementThe Watcher is What Ifs' narrator, and the audience guides through the multiverse. However, there's more to him than just being an ominous presence in the background. The Watcher, unlike WandaVisions Scarlet Witch, newly-crowned, and Lokis He Who Resists, is very hands-off in the Disney+ animated series. Like Wanda and Kang, What Ifs Watcher loves storytelling and people who can bring stories to life by simply being there and interacting with each other in surprising, chaotic ways.Wright spoke to io9 about his character, Westworld, The Batman and more. Wright explained that despite keeping a distance from Marvels villains and heroes, he is in some ways defined by them. His passion is to connect with them, their heroism and their flaws. He is nothing without them. They are his love and he is driven by them to give his life purpose and meaning.Lokis TVA considered Nexus Events, which needed to be stopped from a new multiverse being born. The Watcher sees bright futures that are different but fundamentally the same as the ones he loves. Wright views the Watchers as more active fans than an impartial observer, similar to What Ifs. Wright stated that Wright believes that fans' passion for these characters comes from a level of trust, understanding and hope that is instilled in them in a way not possible outside of mythology. This connection is powerful for both the Watcher and for fans.Wrights Watcher is not the first character to be featured in the MCU (see Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2) and Because What Ifs stories are all canon it is possible that Wrights Watcher (Uatu), might make an appearance in the MCU at some point. This is especially important considering the state of the multiverse. Wright could not confirm if Wright was considering reprising his role, but he did not rule out the possibility. Wright stated that What If is a lot about the belief that all things can be achieved. The answer is "What if?"Disney+ will be launching "What If" on August 11.Are you curious about where our RSS feed went. The new one can be found here.
