Are we properly understanding USA women's dominance on the court? Nah, probably not

This week, we have two collaborations that were around 20 years in the making: LeBron James & Carmelo Anthony, as well as Nas & Eminem. Team USA's women's basketball team had been winning gold medals even before they entered their respective fields. They won the first one in 1 984 and have won every other since.AdvertisementIn 1992 (bronze), women did not win the gold medal at Games. That year, the Dream Team came together on the men's side and won their first pro basketball title. This means that many basketball players, including many on this year's team, are not familiar with more than one color. It's gold.Entering Olympic competition, the women were more overwhelmingly-favored over their field than their male counterparts were in theirs, which you could directly attribute to their 25-year dominance at the Games. They were the world's No. They were the No. 1 team going into the Olympics, despite a loss to Australia in an exhibition match. The USA won the quarterfinal match with Australia with a win of 79 to 55 (the 54th consecutive Olympic win), and it will now face Serbia.Serbia was ranked No. 1 at the Games. According to FIBA, Serbia was ranked No. 8 overall and won 2-1 in group play. The world No. 3 Spain. They defeated China 77 to 70 in the quarters. That was their only highlight, as the Americans swept through them in the semifinals. That's what I meant, cmon, fam. There was no doubt that every oddsmaker favors Team USA. That was quickly dispelled. After the first quarter, the scores were 25-12 and 41-23 at halftime. Although you may have felt a little nervous during the third quarter, when Serbia pulled within 14 points of the USA, the lead quickly rose to 19 (58-39) as the fourth quarter began. Team USA won the game 79 to 59. The Americans shot 48% from the floor, and made 88 per cent of their 16 free-throw attempts. Brittney Griner was the leader with 15 points, 12 rebounds and a 6-for-11 shooting record. Chelsea Gray scored 14 points while shooting 5-for-6. Breanna Stewart added 12 points and nine boards. The current Olympic record for Team USA is 71-3. They have not lost an Olympic game since 1992. This means that every gold medal win from 1996 to 2016 was a perfect 8-0 record. It would be 6-0 if the Olympic format had been changed to allow for three groups of four rather than six before the knockout stage. I hope people will understand this dynasty, as it is legitimate.AdvertisementIt is the 12th Olympics in which women's basketball has been featured as part the Summer Games. Team USA is aiming for its ninth gold medal. The Soviet Union (twice), and the 1992 Unified Team, or former Soviet Union, won the other three. Japan, the host nation and first medalist in a gold-medal game, will stand in Team USA's way to their seventh consecutive gold.
