Spotify Pauses Plans to Add AirPlay 2 Support to iOS App for the 'Foreseeable Future'

Spotify has announced that plans to add AirPlay 2 support for its iOS app are now on an indefinite hold.A Spotify representative stated that the streaming music service was working to support AirPlay 2. However, the company had stopped the efforts due to "audio driver compatibility problems." Representative described AirPlay 2 support to be "a bigger project that we won’t be able complete in the near future."AirPlay 2 was launched in iOS 11.4 May 2018. It includes several improvements to the original AirPlay wireless sound protocol. These enhancements include multi-room audio, Siri voice control and buffering. AVFoundation framework APIs can be implemented by an app to support AirPlay 2. This four-step process is described on Apple's developer site.Spotify is yet to provide native support for the HomePod or its HomePod mini predecessor, despite Apple opening the speaker up to third-party music apps last year. Spotify filed a complaint against Apple in March 2019, alleging that the iPhone maker "locked Spotify and other rivals out of Apple services like Siri, HomePod and Apple Watch".We have reached out to Spotify for comments and will provide an update if we receive a response.
