Richard Trumka, A.F.L.-C.I.O. Chief, Dies at 72

Richard Trumka, president of the A.F.L.C.I.O. for the past 12 years, and an influential voice within Democratic politics, has died. He was 72.The death was confirmed by the federation. According to A.F.L.C.I.O., the cause of death was a heart attack. Official, who didn't say where Trumka died, said that it was a heart attack.The death of Senator Charles Schumer, a New York senator, was announced on the Senate floor. In an emotional tribute, Mr. Schumer stated that America's working people have lost a brave warrior in a time when they most needed him.After serving as secretary-treasurer since 1995 and president of United Mine Workers of America, Trumka was elected to head the federation in 2009.
