ASHBURN (Va.) -- The Washington Football Team has removed Native American garb from the stadium after dropping its controversial name a while back. The team announced Wednesday that Washington has prohibited fans from wearing Native American face paint or headdresses to FedEx Field games this season.Washington will host a practice at the stadium on Friday, with around 20,000 people expected. This will be the largest crowd since the 2019 home finale. It will also be the largest attendance since July 2020 when the organization decided to change its name. According to Jason Wright, the Football Team will be the name for 2021. The permanent name will be announced "early 2022," team president Jason Wright said. Wright stated that they won't announce the name until they have established a logo and new branding for the organization, as well as completed the trademark process.Wright stated that they had worked closely with Native American leaders in the search for a new name. Wright recently revealed that Washington will not choose the name Warriors for its new name. In 2007, Dan Snyder, the owner of this name, had applied for trademark protection. He was trying to bring an Arena League in Washington. However, Native American leaders stated to ESPN last summer that the new name would be too similar to the old and therefore unacceptable.Although the team had long maintained that it would keep the burgundy and gold color scheme, they decided to get rid of its cheerleaders in favour of a coed dance group.
