Cole Hamels agrees to deal to return to MLB with Los Angeles Dodgers, sources say

Sources confirmed Wednesday that the Los Angeles Dodgers have reached a deal to sign four-time All Star Cole Hamels.Hamels auditioned during a Texas workout last month and passed his physical Wednesday morning. According to a source, the Dodgers will give Hamels a prorated $1million for the remainder of this season. They will also offer $200,000 in incentives each time he starts.Hamels, a San Diego native, was limited to one start last season with the Atlanta Braves because of shoulder and neck injuries. He has spent most of the year recovering his health. The 37-year old left-hander, who is 37 years old, held a showcase for other teams in July. He's still getting stretched in Arizona. He will report to Dodger Stadium for his next bullpen session and then return to the spring training facility of the team to increase his arm strength. This agreement is made on the same day as Max Scherzer, a three-time Cy Young Award recipient, will make his Dodgers debut in the Houston Astros. The Scherzer acquisition -- Trea Turner was traded for Scherzer in exchange for four prospects last week -- was made possible by the uncertainty surrounding Trevor Bauer, who is currently facing sexual assault allegations.Hamels' addition was additional insurance for Clayton Kershaw and Tony Gonsolin, as well as Danny Duffy. All three are on the injured list.Kershaw has been absent since July 3 due to forearm inflammation. His rehab seems to have stagnated. Gonsolin was put on the IL Friday due to shoulder inflammation. Duffy won't be able to recover from his flexor strain until September.Hamels is a key player in the dominant Philadelphia Phillies teams. He has a 163-122 career record with a 3.43 ERA over 2,698 regular season innings. In 2008, he was named World Series MVP by the Phillies.Hamels' last full season of 2019 saw him posting a 3.81 ERA and 143 strikeouts, 56 walks and 141 2/3 innings in 141 innings for the Chicago Cubs. The Dodgers currently have five starters, Hamels, Bauer and Scherzer, Kershaw, and David Price. They have won eight Cy Young Awards and made 26 All-Star Game appearances.MLB Network first reported Hamels' deal.
