Rep. Billy Long launches Missouri Senate campaign after meeting with Trump

Jamestown Associates, a prominent Republican media company that created ads for Trump's presidential campaigns, is Long's advisor. Caroline Wren was also a key fundraiser in Trumps reelection campaign. Long also appointed Kellyanne Conway as a senior advisor, having previously served as Trump's counselor and managing the last months of his 2016 campaign.Conway is also an adviser to several 2022 candidates and is listed as the special guest on an invitation at Long's donor event next week in Springfield.Long, 65, is running to succeed retiring GOP Sen. Roy Blunt. He joins a Republican primary field which includes former Gov. Eric Greitt, Mark McCloskey and state Attorney General Eric Schmitt. Eric Greitens. Ann Wagner, Rep. Ann Wagner, announced Tuesday that she will not be participating in the primary and instead run for reelection. With so many candidates in the race, it is now time to compete for donors. Long has sent out invitations to next week's fundraiser. The host committee includes Johnny Morris, a Bass Pro Shops executive, and Robert Low, a trucking company owner.Trump has not yet endorsed a candidate in this race, but he has been in constant contact with Missouri Senator Josh Hawley about how to engage. Hawley has not yet indicated who he might support, despite having been approached by all major Republican candidates. The candidates in a state where Trump won by 15 points are doing everything they can to show their loyalty to him. A super PAC associated with Schmitt launched a digital advertisement featuring a picture of Trump standing beside it. Greitens, in contrast, campaigned recently with Trump's former personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani. Kimberly Guilfoyle (Dennis Trump Jr.'s girlfriend), was also signed on to Greitens' national campaign chairman. Long traveled to the southern border with Trump in June, weeks before his Senate campaign announcement.Top GOP leaders are concerned about Greitens' departure from office in 2018, following allegations that Greitens had sexually assaulted a woman. Many party officials are concerned that Greitens' primary victory could open Democrats up to winning the general election in a state they wouldn't be able to compete with. This would put at risk the GOP's chances of capturing the Senate majority, currently split 50-50.Long seemed to be taking an implicit swipe at Greitens during his Wednesday evening announcement. We must get the Senate back. You won't get anything unless you get the Senate back. Long stated to Fox's Carlson that he is the man that can win the Missouri Senate seat and ensure that there isn't a large race there.Although Greitens has had difficulty raising money, Richard Uihlein is a billionaire shipping executive and industrial supply company executive, who is also one of the largest Republican Party donors. Peter Thiel, a tech investor who donated to the Schmitt-aligned Super PAC, is another major donor who has participated in the race.
