Third was enough for Thomas Ploessel and Erik Heil to win bronze.Victory was Britain’s 12th gold medal of the Games. This is a remarkable feat for Fletcher (31), and Bithell (34) to win against Burling, Tuke and Tuke who together have won six World Championships and were on the winning team in the America's Cup.The GB-Spain pair finished in second place in the medal race, alongside Spain's Diego Botin (silver medallists at 2020 World Championships)Both teams were four points behind New Zealand, with a 10-point gap to Germany and Denmark. For most of the medal race, the Britons were leading and, even though Burling & Tuke briefly moved into 2nd, which would have secured gold for the Kiwi boat's, the Germans fought back and were eventually held off by Fletcher & Bithel in an exciting charge for the finish. This is Bithell's second sailing medal at the Tokyo Olympics, and Bithell's third overall after he won silver in the 470 class at London 2012 with Luke Patience.Bithell was not selected for Rio 2016. Fletcher placed sixth in the 49er class, Alain Sign.
