Biden administration sued by ACLU over migrant expulsions

Title 42 was first used by former President Donald Trump at the outbreak of the pandemic in order to expel migrants and not allow them to seek asylum. The ACLU, shortly after Biden was elected, agreed to suspend litigation against the administration in order to negotiate an end of the public health authority.Democratic legislators, immigrant advocates, and public health specialists have been urging the Biden administration not to implement the policy. They claim it is illegal, inhumane, and not justified by public safety considerations. They claim that migrants could be isolated and tested upon entering the country in order to prevent the spread Covid-19.On Monday, the ACLU of Texas filed a joint motion in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. They agreed that negotiations had reached an impasse.According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection figures, more than 231,000 migrants were apprehended at U.S.-Mexico borders this year. More than 70,000 families were apprehended. About a third of them were expelled to Mexico under the Title 42 order.Mexico has been less willing to accept families that have been expelled under Title 42 in recent months. This has led to a large number of immigrants to the U.S. being allowed to stay in the country. Biden has stated that all migrant families should return.
