Buffalo Bills, QB Josh Allen to table contract talks if no deal by Week 1, GM Brandon Beane says

Booger McFarland and Tim Hasselbeck offer their picks for teams that could end Super Bowl droughts in this season's Super Bowl. (1:39).ORCHARD PARK (N.Y.) -- Bills general manager Brandon Beane said Monday that he will wait until the start the regular season to talk with Josh Allen about a long-term extension. Discussions are being put off until next year.Beane would not give a precise date, but said that the sides had agreed to suspend negotiations before September Week 1, so as to not distract from the fourth-year starter, who has a rookie contract through the end 2022.Beane stated that Josh and I were in lockstep regarding this during a short interview after practice. "There will not be any negotiating in-season. We will at some point press the pause key."The Bills are in their second week and will open their preseason schedule against Detroit on August 13.Beane made the first hint at a deadline when he appeared on Buffalo's flagship radio station WGR-550 earlier in the day."We'll be seeing you soon. He said that August is almost over, so we have a few more weeks to get it done, or to delay it and do it again in 2022. We will hopefully get something done this coming year. We'll be happy even if we don't get anything done. Josh is aware. We have had many great conversations about it this summer and spring. In May, the Bills saved time by acquiring Allen's fifth-year option worth almost $23 million. Although the fifth year of the contract will be guaranteed, the Bills have the option to extend the contract by renegotiating the deal. After a remarkable season, Allen received a substantial raise. He set many franchise scoring and passing records while leading Buffalo to its first AFC East title in 1995. It also saw its longest playoff run in 27-years. The season ended in defeat for Buffalo against Kansas City in AFC Championship Game. The 25-year old Allen reaffirmed a position that was uneasy in Buffalo since Jim Kelly, a Hall of Famer, retired after 1996.Allen began training camp by stating that he is not worried about contract negotiations.Allen stated, "Whether it happens, or not, it's going to not change my approach to being the best teammate and the best leader I could be for this team, this organization." "My attention is totally on the field."
