According to Canadian officials, two travelers who attempted to enter Toronto from the U.S. were fined almost $20,000 each after they provided false information about proof of vaccination and predeparture COVID testing.According to a press release, the Public Health Agency of Canada stated that the travelers attempted to enter Toronto from the U.S. on the week of July 18. They provided false information and were found noncompliant with the requirement to stay at a government-authorized accommodation and test upon arrival, according to the release.Officials said they each received four penalties totaling $19720.Although travel restrictions for Americans who have been vaccinated are being eased in August, Canada still enforces strict entry requirements.Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada and people registered under Indian Act, as well as protected persons, can enter Canada. However, they must pass a COVID test. The majority of travelers will also need to quarantine for 14 days after arriving. Dual Canadian citizens are allowed to enter Canada with a valid passport and/or special authorization.Although travel restrictions have been eased for Americans who are vaccinated and want to enter Canada, the country still enforces strict entry requirements.According to Friday's statement by the Public Health Agency, ignoring quarantine instructions while entering the country could result in a $5,000 penalty for each day of non-compliance. False information regarding vaccination status could result in a $750,000 fine or up to six months imprisonment.Canada will reopen its borders to all fully vaccinated U.S citizens and permanent residents starting Aug. 9. To enter, travelers must pass pre-entry COVID testing and submit a quarantine program.Travel from Canada to the U.S. remains restricted.
