Simone Biles withdraws from vault, uneven bars at Summer Olympics; status for last two individual events to be determined

TOKYO -- Simone Biles resigned from Sunday's individual finals at the Summer Olympics in the vault or uneven bars.USAG released a statement saying that Simone Biles had withdrawn from the vault and uneven bars event finals after consulting with her medical team. She will be evaluated every day to determine if she can compete in finals for balance beam and floor exercise.After her first vault, Biles, 24, withdrew from Tuesday’s team final. She later stated to the media that she was no longer able to trust herself. To focus on her mental well-being, she opted out Thursday's all around final.ResultsBiles posted a series videos and posts to her Instagram story Friday explaining that she still struggles with "twisties" as well as saying her "mind-body are just not in sync". Twisties are a term gymnasts use to describe feeling lost in the air. This can lead to serious injuries during routines.Biles can be seen performing a 1 twist on her back in one video.She wrote in a caption, "I don't believe you realize how dangerous it is on hard/competitive surfaces."Biles will be replaced in vault by MyKayla skinner. Skinner had the fourth-highest vault score during qualification but was not eligible for the event because of the two-per country rule. Jade Carey and Skinner will be joining the Americans in that final.Sunisa Lee won gold in Thursday's all-around event and will be the only countrywoman to compete in the bars final. No other American had a high enough qualifying score. Biles will be replaced by Melanie de Jesus dos Santos from France.Biles was a familiar face at the Tokyo Olympics. She was the favourite to win the all around title as well as the vault, floor, and beam titles. She won five medals at the 2016 Games, four of them golds. She was qualified for the finals of all four events and received the highest overall score during Sunday's qualifying.During the all-around final, Carey and Lee were cheered on by Biles.USAG stated in the statement that they are still in awe and awe of Simone for her ability to manage this situation with courage, grace, and all the athletes who have stepped in during these unexpected circumstances.The beam final will be held Tuesday, while the floor final will take place Monday.
