Pittsburgh Google contractors ratify deal with HCL ' TechCrunch

Nearly two decades ago, Google's Pittsburgh operations contractors voted to join United Steelworkers union to gain more representation in labor rights. This was an early example for a building union movement among tech workers across all spectrums. Both sides continued to negotiate despite other bitter battles among blue- and white-collar workers. These negotiations have led to something concrete this week.Contract workers fought for the same treatment they received from other tech workers. It seemed that Google wanted to remain out of the fray alongside HCL Technologies, the consultancy company that had staffed the workers.Google stated that many of our partners have unionized workers, while others don't, as many did after the initial union vote. Like all of our partners, HCLs employees can choose to unionize or not. It is up to them and their employer. We will continue to be a partner with HCL.According to the USW the contract has been ratified by the 65 workers based in Pittsburgh. According to a union note, it is a three-year-deal which covers working conditions as well as job security and wages.USW Tech Workers Ratify Historic First Contract at HCL https://t.co/VY8XLGThUr United Steelworkers (@steelworkers) July 30, 2021In a press release, USW President Tom Conway stated that this agreement was the result of nearly two years of hardwork, patience, and solidarity from HCL members. Our struggle with HCL is a reminder that every worker deserves the benefits and protections of a union contract.HCL stated last week that the deal was close to completion. In a statement, HCL told The Verge that it had been active in constructive and fair discussions throughout the process with the USW. We have been firm in our determination to respect the rights of our employees to unionize if they so choose.USW released a statement stating that Renata Nelson, a member of the bargaining committee, noted tensions in the process. Parks stated in the release that HCL attempted to stop us from forming unions. When it failed, the company continued the negotiation process and sent our jobs abroad in retaliation. We are confident that we will be heard now that there is a strong union and contract. We reached out to Google for comments.
