Ron DeSantis said Friday that he would reject school-age mandates to wear masks and would soon issue an order giving parents or guardians the right to decide whether to allow their child to wear a mask at school.Republican Governor, who threatened to call an emergency session on masks at schools, will sign the emergency action very soon. This is due to Broward County School District making it mandatory that teachers and students wear masks to combat the spread of coronavirus Delta in the state. The fourth-largest school in the country, Miami-Dade County Public Schools will soon make a decision about mask mandates.It is not required by any school districts as of today. Nevertheless, the CDC and other organizations have been pushing for everyone to wear masks every day. DeSantis stated during the event that they have received a lot of support from DeSantis. This would be a big mistake.Although the governor didn't give any details about when he would sign the order, he said that it would direct his Department of Education and Department of Health, to create emergency rules that allow parents to decide whether their child wears a mask. This is an issue that has been exacerbated by DeSantis' recent statements. In the next few weeks, many Florida schools will resume in-person education.As the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued new guidance this week on masks in schools, it stated that all students from K-12 should have face covers inside schools. This move furthers the governor's non-interventionist approach to the pandemic, and follows his pledges not to accept school closures, lockdowns, or Covid-mandates.Florida is experiencing a spike in coronavirus cases. On Wednesday, Florida reported 17,589 new Covid-19 infections. This marks the highest number since January. Florida is currently one of the most affected states in the country and accounts for one fifth of all new infections nationwide.DeSantis' decision to use the administrative authority of the administration to overrule school boards that require the masks is amid open talk about a special legislative session. DeSantis stated he would call it if either the Biden administration, or local districts imposed mask requirements for schools. DeSantis wanted to call a special session but was rebuffed by legislative leaders.In a statement after the DeSantis event, Chris Sprowls, the state House Speaker (Republican from Palm Harbor), stated that Governor DeSantis understands that parents have the best opportunity to make the right choices for their children. He and his actions today show that he has faith in fellow Floridians and has placed trust in them. I support them all.Wilton Simpson, the state senator president (R-Trilby), said that he was grateful for Governor DeSantis' announcement.The largest teacher union in Florida, the Florida Education Association, condemned DeSanti's move to cover up local school boards.Gov. DeSantis believes that Tallahassee is the best place to find what Floridians need. Andrew Spar, President of the FEA, stated in a statement.Spar stated that we reject such thinking. Superintendent Alberto Carvalho stated that the school district would seek Covid-19 recommendations by local health professionals regardless of any executive orders. Two weeks before classes are scheduled to start on Aug. 23, DeSantis said Friday that the district was consulting with its health department.Carvalho stated that I believe that broadened pronouncements via executive order and state statutes that don't differentiate between conditions may not be in the best interests of our communities.DeSantis swift action comes just two days after Broward County's leaders, one of the most populous school districts in Florida, voted unanimously to make masks compulsory for all children and adults in the entire district.Broward County's school board stated Friday that it would review DeSantis order once he has issued it, and then decide on next steps.While most school districts will be able to start the semester without masks, the Delta variant has forced some counties to reconsider their Covid-19 policies.DeSantis stated Friday that parents should feel that their child is being taught this information if they are serious about it.That would be the fairest thing to do. Let the parents make the final decision.
