Rep. Richard Neal (D-Mass.) Richard Neal (D-Mass.) stated that the committee requires the documents in order to review how thorough the IRS audits presidential tax returns. This is something the IRS routinely does. Republicans claim that Democrats would like to examine the returns for anything that could embarrass Trump. After the Trump administration stated that they didn't have a legitimate reason to seek the documents, Democrats have been suing the Trump administration for long-hidden documents since more than two decades. This opinion is coming the same day as Trump's lawyers and Democrats, who have been privately conferring for several months about the matter. They are now briefing District Court Judge Trevor McFadden to discuss how they plan to proceed with the case.McFadden is a Trump appointee. He has issued a standing Order requiring Treasury to notify the former president 72 hours in advance if they plan to hand over the documents. This could allow Trump the opportunity to take additional legal action to stop their release.McFadden has been pushing both sides to reach a compromise.Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance already holds Trump's tax records in a separate investigation.Neal made the following statement: "As I have maintained for many years, the case of the committee is very strong, and the law is on my side."I'm glad the Department of Justice agreed to this and that we can continue.
