Amazon fined '746M for violating privacy rules

Denis Charlet/AFP via Getty ImagesAccording to company filings, Amazon was fined 746 million by Luxembourg's data protection agency (CNPD), for failing to comply with EU privacy rules.According to the filing, this decision was made on July 16th and the regulator ruled "Amazons processing personal data was not in compliance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation."The company stated in the filing that it believed the CNPDs decision was without merit. It also said that it would vigorously defend itself in this matter.Amazon spokeswoman said that they strongly disagreed with the CNPDs ruling and would appeal. The decision regarding how customers see relevant advertising depends on subjective and untested interpretations under European privacy law. The proposed fine is completely out of proportion.The data protection authority also requests "practice revisions," which cannot be described in the document.The fine is now higher than reported previously.
