20.Shuhei Nishida was a Japanese pole vaulter who competed in the 1936 Olympics. Sueo Oe was also a friend. They refused to compete against one another to decide which one would bring home the silver or bronze medals. They were not allowed to compete against each other and the Japanese team was instructed to decide which man received which medal. Based on Nishida's performance in the contest, they awarded him the silver. However, it didn’t really matter much. The pair was reunited in Japan after having their medals split in half. They were then "fused" into two mixed medals, which were later known as the "Memorials of Friendship".
