Avelo Air Adds Four Unique Routes From Burbank

Avelo Airlines was the startup that opened operations from its Burbank base in 2021. The airline also plans on opening a New Haven facility in the future. It is the second-newest airline in America, following Breeze Airways. The airline just announced four new routes.Avelos Burbank expansionAvelo Airlines announced that it will launch four new routes out of Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) using 189-seat Boeing 737-8800s. The airline will fly:2x Weekly to Fort Collins, Colorado (FNL), starting October 6, 20212x Weekly to Monterey (California) (MRY), starting September 30, 2021Weekly 2x to Provo (Utah) (PVU), starting September 17, 2021Weekly 2x to St. George (SGU), starting September 17, 2021These routes are described in more detail here:Avelo Airlines will fly to Fort Collins as the only airline.Avelo Airlines will compete with JSX for the Burbank-to Monterey route. However, the airlines target different types of consumers.Avelo Airlines will fly to Provo as the second airline after Allegiant. Allegiant operates about half a dozen routes with limited frequency.Avelo Airlines joins the American, Delta and United regional carriers in serving St. George. However, none of them fly to the Los Angeles region from there.Avelo will launch more routes out of BurbankAvelos growth is a mystery to me.I usually have an opinion, often wrong, about a carrier's strategy or expansion. But with Avelo, I am just watching and waiting, not knowing what to think. Avelo adds value to consumers by operating routes that aren't otherwise served. I mean, just imagine how amazing this expansion is if your goal is to travel between Fort Collins and Burbank (or any other area that is similar). .Allegiant has been very successful in operating leisure point to point routes. However, Avelo and Allegiant Avelo have different bases from which most flights are operated. Allegiant, on the other hand, operates wherever there is demand.Avelo will fly from Burbank to all sorts of airports that don't have nonstop service from Los Angeles. Allegiant will fly from Flint to Punta Goda, St. Petersburg and Toledo, Wichita or Destin, and Appleton, to Nashville. All flights depart at 6AM on Tuesdays and 11PM on Saturdays (or something similar).Avelo is still a new airline. It could be that it is evolving into the Allegiant model. Allegiant has a few focus cities because that's how the demand evolves naturally. It can also be difficult to expand efficiently.I believe that it is more sensible to use the Allegiant strategy for point-to-point services and fly almost anywhere rather than sticking to your bases when flying. However, I think Avelo might eventually work towards this.Bottom lineAvelo Air will add four new routes from Burbank to Fort Collins, Monterey and Provo. These routes will all be operated weekly and only the Burbank-to Monterey route currently has an airline. The airline will now fly to more than a dozen destinations from Burbank with this expansion. Avelo will also be opening a New Haven facility this spring. What do you think of Avelos' expansion and overall strategy?(Tip of my hat to @IshrionA
