Philipp Grubauer shares his reasons for signing with the Kraken. (2:03).The Seattle Kraken made waves in free agency by signing Philipp Grubauer, goalie, to a six year deal worth $5.9M annually, Wednesday.Grubauer's former team, Colorado Avalanche was unable to reach a contract agreement. Sources say that Grubauer signed with Seattle after those discussions continued into Wednesday.Grubauer was a Vezina Trophy finalist in last season's campaign and helped the Avalanche win the Presidents Trophy.Grubauer, 29 years old, was able to enjoy the best season in his nine-year history. With seven shutouts, he was the league's leader. He finished second in wins (30), goals-against (1.95) and eighth overall in save percentage (.923).Grubauer played six seasons in Washington before being traded to Colorado in 2018. Grubauer's last season production was a huge loss as he was on a three year deal with a cap hit only $3.33million per season. After paying Cale Makar, a young star defenseman, and Gabriel Landeskog, captain of Colorado Hockey Clubs.Colorado is currently looking for goaltending assistance.The Kraken have an oversupply of goalies, however. In the expansion draft, they selected Joey Daccord, Vitek Vanecek, and Chris Driedger. Driedger was expected to be Seattle's top goalie next season and signed a $10.5 million, three-year contract with Kraken.Seattle may now be tempted to trade one of its younger goalies to take advantage of their strength. Sources claim that Vanecek (25), could be repurchased by the Washington Capitals.The Kraken have also signed a three-year agreement with Alex Wennberg, a former Panthers forward. This deal has an average annual value of $4.5 Million.Last season, Wennberg scored 17 goals to set a new career record. In his first year in Florida, he added 12 assists. He had 59 points in his best season, which was 2016-17 for Columbus.
