U.S. women win first 3-on-3 basketball gold medal at Tokyo Olympics

TOKYO -- They have a lot of memories in their trophy cases and scrapbooks from Final Fours, All-America honors, and impressive performances in the pros.All of them now have Olympic gold medals to match all that.The U.S. team of Allisha Gray and Jackie Young, along with Kelly Plum and Kelsey Plum, took an early lead over the Russian Olympic Committee team. They then won an 18-15 win Wednesday to claim the title in 3-on-3 basketball at the Olympics.On Wednesday night, ROC faced Latvia to win the men's title. The bronze medals were awarded to the women of China and the men of Serbia.The Americans won the majority of the tournament, just like they did in their final. They won nine of the nine games, and lost only one. Plum, who is the NCAA's all-time top scorer, was also the winner of this game, scoring 55 points in nine games. To give the U.S. a strong lead, she scored all five points in the final.All four players have had successful WNBA careers. Plum is the only player among the four who hasn't won a college national title. This seems more than a consolation award.After the match was over, she hugged her teammates and then made their way to the stands to visit Thomas Bach, president of IOC.Jill Biden, the first lady of the United States, was present at the Aomi Urban Sports Park's opening weekend.This foursome is part of the Tokyo see-and-be-seen crowd.
