He is a man who enjoys poker, whiskey and furniture covered with sheets. Tell is not related to Willam Tell and has no poker tell. Tell, an ex-military interrogator picks up card counting while in prison. He is also subject to Willem Dafoe's atrocities and threatens others with a bloody smile. As if that werent bad enough, hes also got a skeezy-looking Tye Sheridan and a confident-as-all-hell Tiffany Haddish egging him on. They whisper, count the cards. It's the one thing you excel at. You are the card counter, or at least that's what we think. We would, if the movie didn't plunge into the depths and misery like so many Schraders movies.His collaborations with Martin Scorsese (who produced The Card Counter) are still his most prominent works. Schrader also wrote Taxi Driver and Raging Bull. His classics include Blue Collar, Hardcore and American Gigalo. First Reformed was Schraders last film, which received some of the most lauded reviews in Hollywood and earned him his first Oscar nomination. The A.V. Club praised Schraders last film, First Reformed. It was also the first Oscar nomination. The A.V. Club called it Schraders greatest film in a long time. So put it in your pipe, and enjoy it. In April, he teased that a three-year series on the origins and development of Christianity would be made with Scorsese. We have not heard much about Jesus Christ, Origins since April.
