M. Night Shyamalan terrified Universal with Split twist ending

M. Night Shyamalan is a master of creeps (sweeps, bleeps), and has been terrorizing audiences for over two decades with his high-concept stories about beaches which make you old. Split's ending was what sparked the most screams in his career. But not when the film was released for general audiences. That was when the director shared with Universal the shocking ending to the film. If you have not seen Split yet (which is highly recommended), but want to read the article, be aware that we will spoil the ending. It is also possible that you won't care. So, um, reader, beware.AdvertisementSplit's unexpected ending features David Dunn (Bruce Willis), who was last seen in Shyamalans film Unbreakable. He can be seen watching Splits aftermath on TV. Shyamalan had been hinting at Split's place in the Unbreakable universe for many years. The director spoke with ReelBlend podcast and said that Universal freaked when they saw a Disney character (Disney imprint Touchstone produced Unbreakable).Shyamalan stated that Shyamalan went to Universal Studios chairman, [the] Marketing team, and everyone in the theater. We turn off the lights and play Split. They don't know what the ending is. They didn't know that I had shot it, as I didn't send them the daily. The lights go out. They watch the entire movie. They are completely confused when the next scene starts. They look at me and say, "What are you saying?" That's a Disney movie! I say, "Its all good." You have permission! Imagine that you are the chairman of the studio and the guy reveals to you that it is a sequel for a movie from another studio.Shyamalan claims that the scene in question was not included in the script. He sold the film without even mentioning the ending. He and Bruce went to Philly to shoot three hours after the movie was over. The ending scene was not included in the movie I wrote. The studio received the movie without the end scene. It was shot without the end scene. It was shown to us without the end scene. The best part was when I said, Lets go for it! And then he was like Why, what? And I was like: Well, this movie is in the Unbreakableworld. I don't know if we will ever make a sequel. Is it just that you want to come for three hours, bro. I'll be there.Because Shyamalan's latest movie, Old is currently America's number one, the twists just keep coming. Universal will probably forgive him for his scare.[via IndieWire]
