WR Randall Cobb expects trade back to Green Bay Packers, source says

GREEN BAY (WIS.) -- Randall Cobb, a receiver, was brought back by the Green Bay Packers one day after Aaron Rodgers had verbally agreed to terms for his return to the Green Bay Packers.Late Tuesday afternoon, the Packers appeared to be close to acquiring Cobb. According to a source, Cobb will be returning to his former team after the details of a deal with the Houston Texans are finalized.Cobb will be 31 years old on Aug. 22. He played his first eight seasons at Green Bay where he was a Rodgers' favorite receiver, especially in the slot. After the 2018 season, he was released to free agency and signed a one-year contract with the Dallas Cowboys. The Texans signed him to a three-year deal worth $27 million. He played in 10 games in the Texans' last season. This was more than he played in in Green Bay last year, when he had lingering hamstring issues. In Week 11, he sustained a toe injury and missed six games. He had 38 catches, 441 yards, and three touchdowns.Since Cobb's departure, Rodgers hasn’t had a true slot receiver. The Packers selected Amari Rodgers, a third-round draft pick to fill the void in their offense.Evidently, Rodgers to-Cobb had an easier ring to it that Rodgers to-Rodgers. However, it is not clear if Cobb's return was a condition for Rodgers' return, or just a suggestion that the Packers made. Cobb was sixth in Packers history, ranking him at 470 catches, 11th in receiving yards (5524) and fourth in touchdown catches (41). His best year was 2014 when he caught 91 passes, for 1,287 yards and 12 scores. He did not miss one game in that season, which was only the second time he had missed one in his entire career.Cobb's role in the mentoring of Amari Rodgers is still to be determined. The two have a strong connection. Cobb's father, Tee Martin, was a Kentucky college coach.Cobb was expected to earn $8.25 million this year. The contract restructuring that will be included in the trade is certain. The Packers also released Jake Dolegala and Blake Bortles, two veteran quarterbacks. Bortles signed a one year, minimum-salary contract on May 24, in spite of Rodgers' absence. Dolegala signed with Packers after a June minicamp tryout. On Wednesday, Rodgers and Jordan Love are the only remaining quarterbacks on the roster. Kurt Benkert will be the first practice of training camp.
