Google TV mobile app redesign adds new services and recommendations ' TechCrunch

Google TV is getting a revamp today, following the launch of Google TV last fall, which introduced a new user interface for Chromecast devices. Google TV's mobile app has been updated with a new user interface and expanded set recommendations. There are also more TV and movies to view.In its earlier days, the app was called Google Play Movies & TV (whew!). However, the app was rebranded as Google TV in September with the new changes to Chromecast. You can search over 700,000.00 TV and movie episodes across the top streaming apps. Find new shows and movies to rent, purchase, or rent.Google is now updating the apps' look and feel with 16:9 widescreen movie posters and show posters, which it claims will give the app an even more cinematic look.It also displays the Rotten Tomatoes scores under each poster, helping users to make informed decisions about what to watch next. To improve your app recommendations, you can also visit the details page of a movie or TV show and mark it as viewed. This will allow Google TV make more recommendations based upon your watch history. It could also be useful if you don't use the app often to tailor its suggestions to your interests. The feature will not allow you to keep track of your progress in a show like the Reelgood and TV Time apps. You can't mark individual episodes as viewed, but only complete series. With the new release, the recommendations feature has been enhanced to better match what you would see on TV. The apps recommendation system now includes more personalized suggestions. It will also be based on your past viewings, interests, and the most popular and relevant content in your area. The trending recommendations are sourced based on what is popular and what is being discussed across the internet, as well hand-picked selections by human editors. You might see recommendations for summer blockbusters or other timely suggestions. The user will now be able to see the latest movie and any recommendations for new content that is being released by services. The app also added new content providers such as Discovery+, Viki and Cartoon Network to its content library. Boomerang can also access on-demand content from live TV service, such as YouTube TV as well as Philo TV and fuboTV. After the platform update in fall, these providers are now available for search and discovery within the mobile app.Google stated at its May I/O Developer Conference that Android TV OS has reached an install base exceeding 80 million devices per month. However, it did not break down how many consumers streamed through Google TV for Chromecast which runs Android TV OS under the hood. Google merged that number with other Android TV OS-powered devices available on the market, including those from partners and TV service providers, so the number also included set-top boxes and operator-tier devices. This is a different market.Although the company stated that the new features are now available on the Google TV Android App in the U.S., they could not provide any timeline or information about international expansions or other platforms.
