A mega-blockbuster return is planned for one of the most iconic and terrifying horror franchises ever. According to the New York Times, David Gordon Green (the original Halloween films) will direct a sequel/reboot in which Hamiltons Leslie Odom Jr. portrays the father of a possessed daughter. He is desperate for help and seeks out Chris MacNeil (Ellen Burstyn), the mother of the original 1973 film. This is her first return to the franchise.AdvertisementLate last year, news broke that Gordon Green was working closely with Blumhouse on The Exorcist's return. The big news is that it's a trilogy, Burstyn has returned, and that Universal & Peacock spent over $400 million on the franchise rights. The film's debut will be in theaters on October 13, 2023. According to the paper, there will be two sequels, one of which could only debut on Peacock. In a press release, David Robinson, president and chief rights holder Morgan Creek stated that there is no better time than now to join forces with the Peacock team, reunite with the great team from Universal, and finally get to work with my Blumhouse friends. David Gordon Green, Danny McBride and Scott Teems have created a compelling continuation to this classic tale. I cannot wait to share it with fans all over the globe.Gordon Green and Peter Sattler wrote the script for this film. They are currently preparing to release Halloween Kills in October. Halloween Ends will follow the film's sequel, Halloween Ends. Universal, Blumhouse and all those involved are obviously pleased with the results of this similarly-spun franchise reboot/sequel trilogy. The new Halloween series, much like the Exorcist team, ignores many of the lesser sequels, but picks the original story and brings back the main character. Scott Teems (Halloween Kills), Danny McBride, Halloween Kills, and Gordon Green were the ones who created this story. The 1973 Exorcist film was so popular that it inspired three sequels, a prequel and a television series in the years since. Burstyn was the Oscar/Emmy/Tony winner, and his participation links the story back to the original film. Blumhouse has had an amazing partnership with Universal. I am grateful to Donna Langley, Jimmy Horowitz, and Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum for their belief in David's vision and for being flexible in distribution. This ensures that the team is supported through every stage of the film's lifeline, Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum stated. They are committed to theatrical exhibition, and will also serve streaming viewers well by bringing exciting franchises like the Exorcist over to Peacock. I am grateful to have worked with David Robinson, Morgan Creek's great team on this iconic franchise.Updated 7/26/2021 at 2:25 p.m. ET: This post has been updated to include a release date, quotes, and writing/story credit creditsAre you curious about where our RSS feed went.
