Cameron Champ fends off dehydration to win 3M Open by 2 strokes

Cameron Champ is par on 18 in order to win the 3M Open. (0:33).BLAINE (Minn.) -- Cameron Champ struggled tremendously through the first half this year. A frustrating series of performances led him back to his mental state more than any mechanical fault.The 26-year old was like many newlyweds. He found himself distracted by the delicate balance between pursuing his career and trying to make a happy home life. A bad round caused him to become too upset.Champ was not mad at all about the 3M Open.Champ battled dehydration and putted crisply to win a 5-under-66 on Sunday. This was Champ's third career victory.Champ said, "I just did a complete 180" in how I wake up each morning and how I react to certain situations and adjust to certain things." Champ had five birdies in a round that was bogey-free to finish at 15 under 269 at TPC Twin Cities.Charl Schwartzel, Jhonattan Las Vegas, and Louis Oosthuizen tied for second. Keith Mitchell finished fifth at 12 under. Five players were tied for sixth.Champ was joined by Jon Rahm, Collin Morikawa and Bryson deChambeau as the only Under-28 players to win each of the three previous seasons. Champ jumped from 142nd place to 49th in FedEx Cup standings with the top-125 qualifying for the playoff opener.After nine missed cuts, one withdrawal and 16 starts in 2021, this month has been a remarkable turnaround for Texas A&M's product. The Zurich Classic of New Orleans tied for 17th place.Champ hit the reset key after missing the cut at Detroit's Rocket Mortgage Classic three weeks ago, but he emerged tied for 11th at the John Deere Classic Illinois."After Detroit, after a while, I took a step back, and said, "You know what? This is enough. This is enough. Champ stated, "I'm not enjoying this game."Jessica, his wife, was obviously happy to hear this.Champ stated that it's more about figuring out what I want in golf, and then deciding who I want at home. He put his hands on his knees one time and hung his head as he tried to regain his composure. After his safe strategy of keeping away from the lake with the tee shot, he felt plenty of it on hole 13. He landed in a sandy, trampled area just behind a group of trees.Champ was able to chip onto the primary rough and then scoot up on the fairway. Champ's approach was flawless and landed perfectly. He then rolled back towards the pin. He putted the par putt, and was able to celebrate his first top-10 finish since October.Champ said, "The Gatorade certainly helped, I think. keep me going," and won the Sanderson Farms Championship (2019), the year he became a professional, as well as the Safeway Open (2020).With an average of 8.48 strokes gained, he had the best putting performance in the 3M Open field.Oosthuizen also shot 66, in a stronger finish to The Open's previous weekend. His 54-hole lead was broken by a fourth-round of 71, which made him tie for third.Oosthuizen, who was six shots ahead of Champ, birdied three of the four last holes to give himself an opportunity. Oosthuizen almost made an eagle on the 18th hole, which is the hardest par-5 hole on the PGA Tour. But the ball sailed out of play. Oosthuizen was able to putt from 2 feet for birdie, his fourth place finish in seven starts. His South African compatriot, Schwartzel, shot a 68 to match Vegas's score in the final round.Oosthuizen stated that "We had fun here this week and I'm trying to see how I can go one step better than all these seconds or thirds."After three rounds of play, Cameron Tringale was a 1-stroke leader. He made a triple bogey at the par-3 13th hole, right after two consecutive birdies brought him back in contention. Champ finished 6 strokes ahead of him with a score of 74. Phil Mickelson, the PGA Championship winner, was the only 54-hole leader or coleader to win any of the 13 previous tour events.Matthew Wolff (2019), and Michael Thompson (2020), were the first two winners at the 3M Open. They each tied for 39th at 5 under.Patrick Reed, a newly minted Olympian, tied for 34th at 6. under before returning home to Texas to prepare for Tokyo. After DeChambeau's positive COVID-19 test, he found out Saturday that he had been added to the U.S. Team.Reed stated, "Once an event is started, I'm going to finish it."
