Tencent Introduces Facial Recognition Requirements for Games

Tencent, a Chinese tech company, has developed a facial recognition system to prevent children from playing videogames after hours.China passed an anti-addiction law in 2019 that targets children and teens who play video games at night. On weekdays, children and teens are limited to playing 90 minutes and three hours respectively on weekends and holidays. The bill also established a curfew to prevent children and teens from playing video games. They are also forbidden to play video between 10 p.m. - 8 a.m.Tencent's new system seems to enforce those rules via tech. The Midnight Patrol is a system that scans the face of a player at the computer and then runs it through a list of registered names. A teenager or child who exceeds the time limit will not be allowed to play the game.Tencent will use this facial recognition technology in approximately 60 of its games, including Glory of the King (and Peace Elite). League of Legends is not currently on the list. However, it could be added in a future update. The game will be shut down if players skip the facial scan. This means that you will need to have a facial scan in order to play these games. Tencents' press release states that adults can be kicked off if they make a mistake and have to do a facial scan again to get back into the game.Recommendations of Editors
