At Least 150 Killed in Shootings Across the U.S. During July 4th Weekend

Americans celebrated July 4th in large numbers this year to make up for the year that they missed last year. CNN reports that at least 150 people were shot to death in the United States over the weekend. This is according to data from the Gun Violence Archive. According to data still being updated, there were over 400 shootings in the United States between Friday and Sunday.AdvertisementThese numbers are coming at a time where cities are trying to cope with an increase in gun violence. New York was one of these cities. There were 21 shootings between Friday and Sunday last week, which is actually a decrease on the 25 that occurred last year. Local witnesses described the initial gunshots as fireworks. It kept coming and going, but I couldn't stop hearing it. Bop, boom, bop. The witness then said, "No, it's more than fireworks." On Friday afternoon, four children in Norfolk, Virginia, including a 6-year-old girl were gunned down. Golf pro Gene Siller, a suburban Atlanta resident, was also shot to death at the country club where his work was located. Two other victims of gunshots were found by police on a pickup truck left at the country club's golf course.AdvertisementThe United States had more than 10,000 deaths in 2021 as of July 1. According to the Gun Violence Archive, this number was not reached until July 27th last year. This year has seen at least 336 mass shootings across the United States, which is the same as the total for 2018.
