Canada has relaxed its travel restrictions today for Canadians who have been fully vaccinated and permanent residents. This is part of a gradual effort to ease border controls. Non-Canadians, regardless of their vaccination status, are not generally welcome in Canada. The Delta variant COVID-19 continues its spread in Ontario and other parts.Canadians will be able, starting Monday, to travel again once they have been fully vaccinated. They won't need to quarantine upon their return. This is a major step, and Canadians will benefit from it, stated Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, in a press conference held on 2 July. He spoke just days before the new protocols came into effect, which was 5 July.What does this mean to fully-vaccinated Canadian travelers? To be exempted from a 14-day quarantine upon their return from travels, they must complete extensive paperwork and submit it via the ArriveCAN app. According to the Canadian government, children under 18 years old who have not been fully vaccinated or dependent adults travelling with fully vaccinated travelers must be quarantined for 14 days.Canadians who fly into any of the four Canadian airports that accept international travelers (Toronto Pearson and Calgary), will have to spend a minimum of three nights in a government-designated hotel. This cost can be as high as C$2000. If their COVID-19 test results are negative, the remaining 11 days may be served at home.Canadians are encouraged to download ArriveCAN (Google, Apple) before they leave the country. There is also a browser-based version. They will need to enter their pre-departure COVID-19 results and vaccination information. They must also submit another COVID-19 test upon their return to Canada.According to the guidelines, if you are still being asked by the app to book a quarantine room, it could be one of these three things:Your vaccine was not accepted. Your last dose of vaccine was received less than 14 days before your entry date to Canada. You are trying to upload proof that you have been vaccinated before ArriveCAN has added the vaccination feature. You can start over once the feature is added on July 5, 2021. All previous submissions will be deleted automaticallyBefore you use the ArriveCAN mobile application, make sure to update it.At this point, Canada has only four approved vaccines: Moderna, Pfizer and AstraZeneca/Covishield. Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) is the fourth. For Canadians who have been fully vaccinated abroad, this can pose a problem.Noting that Canadians must still be fully vaccinated and permanent residents are required to provide a 14-day quarantine plan at either the land border or airport. The final decision on whether to exempt someone from quarantine is made by border control. Failure to comply with quarantine can result in fines.Canadians who have been vaccinated must be tested upon arrival in the country. However, they are exempted from the day 8 test.All flights from India remain suspended at the moment, at least up to 21 July. Anyone flying from India to Canada via another country must pass the COVID-19 exam during their stopover.All levels of government are aware that if you weren't eligible to enter Canada before 5 July, you will generally not be eligible to enter Canada.The timing of when we open so Americans and other fully vaccinated people can enter Canada will depend on how it goes and the data we collect. It will also depend on how safe we are in keeping Canadians safe, even as we adjust the rules and as the travel volumes increase, Trudeau said on Friday.We will ensure that Canadians are safe every step of the journey.
