The 2021 Zeitgeist, a term that refers to the spirit or times, may place a greater emphasis on family and community after a year of isolation for many. Independence Day is an extraordinary holiday. The pandemic restrictions on the U.S. markets have been mostly lifted in the last month, and this holiday marks the first time people are reconnected. After a long period of isolation due to pandemic lockdown, the 4th of July holiday will mark the return of family and friends to each other. Bayard Winthrop, American Giant's founder, discusses how he was inspired to create it.
Winthrop was born in 1970s America, when great American brands like Woolrich and Levis were still popular in the market. He stated that he felt almost an emotional connection to those brands, as they were great products and brands he was proud to be associated with. Winthrop moved to the Bay Area in 40 years to be surrounded by great companies that were disrupting and innovating industries.
He was told that North Carolina wasn't able to produce a sweatshirt after he had spent his entire professional career in manufacturing. Winthrop stated, "I found this unacceptable." I believed that the innovation occurring with e-commerce and the internet could lead to an opportunity to restructure my business in a manner that could unlock great American manufacturing again at scale.
Winthrop founded American Giant with the simple belief that domestic improvements could be made. This belief still holds true ten years later. American Giant invests in domestic supply chains, while other brands continue to seek cheaper manufacturing methods overseas. Winthrop stated that quality is guaranteed to be better if you are closer to the product. Period.
Customers shift to durable apparel
Durable, not disposable describes the current consumer mindset shift towards buying more quality and less apparel items. There is also a general trend toward slow fashion. Winthrop concurs, saying, "Consumers today are more aware of their purchasing power, and the effect it has on the environment around them." However, it is not just up to consumers to make the world a better place. Winthrop stated that brands and consumers must work together to encourage and reward good companies and countries, and discourage those who don't. This is particularly true for apparel. Although American Giant isn't a certified B Corporation (only 4,000 companies are certified B Corps), the company acts as one. Certified B Corporations are able to balance profit and purpose. They are legally required by law to take into account the effects of their decisions on workers, customers and suppliers as well as the community and the environment. They act as a network of leaders that drives a global movement of people who use business to promote good.
