Developer Recreates Apple's Old Dashboard Widgets on a Website

A smart developer created a way to go back in time and relive the old Apple nostalgia, even though Apple has discontinued its beloved widget Dashboard.AdvertisementDeveloper Zane Kleinberg revealed a website on Friday that perfectly recreates Apple's classic Dashboard widgets. Kleinberg explained that he was shocked to discover that the widgets were entirely HTML, CSS, jаvascript. He decided to make them again. Although the website is very similar to the old Dashboard, it only contains five widgets, including a world clock, calculator and tile puzzle. It also includes stickies and a unit converter. You can find widgets in the macOS Big Sur notification center. You can access the website on both desktop and mobile. Kleinberg suggests that you use it on your desktop to get the best experience. You can still access the website from your smartphone, but the widgets will now be displayed vertically.Gizmodo was informed by the developer via Twitter that he is still working on the project. He hopes to make it a fully functional version of Dashboard.First, I believe there is something wonderful in bringing back pieces of software that provide a sense of nostalgia and still serve a purpose. Kleinberg stated that these widgets were a part of my childhood and I was able to see them every day when I learned about their construction. It's amazing that software from 15 years ago still works! It is constantly evolving. I am determined to recreate the complete Dashboard experience in all of its glory. This is only the first evolution that I created.Kleinberg's website is quite fun to play with. All the widgets work correctly, accurately calculating my apartment's size from square meters to feet, and keeping track the time in Cupertino (California), where Apple is located. The tile puzzle is a bit more difficult than you might think. As you can see, I am terrible at it and gave up after only a few minutes. It's always art.AdvertisementIt is clear that Mac users will be familiar with the Dashboard and its widgets. It was first introduced in 10.4 Tiger. This was back when Apple still called macOS OS X OS X. It became less popular over the years. This was no doubt due to Apple's decision to make Dashboard disabled by default in macOS 10.10 Yosemite 2014.However, even though something is no longer popular in the mainstream, that doesn't mean it doesn't still have a lot of fans. Who wouldn't love some well-built Apple relics!AdvertisementKleinberg stated that he hopes visitors take away a greater appreciation for small things that bring joy and provide nostalgic feelings. It is amazing how ancient software can still be used and brought back to life.
