Covid: Thousands protest in Brazil against Bolsonaro over pandemic handling

Rio de Janeiro: People protest President BolsonaroTens of thousands have protested against President Jair Bolsonaro's handling of the Covid pandemic and his government.Recent corruption allegations regarding the purchase of vaccines from the ministry of health prompted the protests.The number of deaths due to Covid-19 in Brazil has surpassed 500,000 since last month.It is second in death toll worldwide after the US.Late Friday, a Supreme Court judge granted a request from the prosecutor general for an investigation into the role of Mr Bolsonaro in the scandal.A whistleblower from the ministry has accused Bolsonaro of not taking action after being warned that three months ago, senior officials had accepted bribes in order to buy overpriced Covaxin vaccines.He denied wrongdoing and said that the opposition was fabricating allegations to open impeachment proceedings against his.During a Rio de Janeiro protest, a protester held a sign that read "Bolsonaro Out."Bolsonaro was heavily criticised for failing to implement a coordinated national response, and for his scepticism towards vaccines, lockdowns, and mask-wearing requirements.
